Position Title: SVP Land Development

Job Scope: Bury is a consulting firm for the built environment. Bury was annually ranked in Engineering News-Record’s Top 500 Design Firms and ENR Texas & Louisiana’s Top 100.

Bury was seeking a talented, client-focused individual to join their design team in Dallas, Texas.  As Senior Vice President, this position would align clients’ goals with the design team and the design requirements to complete the projects successfully, on time and within budget.  This person would work directly with the Managing Principal and have the responsibility and accountability to ensure that all assigned personnel are coordinating their activities with other project participants and that the requirements of the Contract were being satisfied.  This candidate was expected to have significant technical knowledge and awareness to be able to recognize when technical problems are developing and to initiate appropriate corrective actions.  The position required a team focused attitude and strong client relationship skills to be able to build and grow the business with key clients.

Candidate Placement: White Hat Executive Search successfully placed a registered professional engineer over 21 years of experience in site development, with approximately three years of mostly municipal practice and 18 years of a wide variety of land development project experience. This candidate had a track record of working with and maintaining client relationships both in the DFW area and around the country including working in joint ventures with other engineering firms to service clients like the Corps of Engineers and smaller single-family developers and business development efforts with commercial developers. He held a solid working knowledge of applicable codes and standards and had managed engineering teams of up to 15 professionals, as well as a JV relationships and external professionals.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Manages design projects. Responsible for planning, scheduling, conducting, and coordinating the technical aspects of projects.
  • Organizes departmental activities, ensuring completion of the project on schedule and within budget constraints.
  • Responsible for preparing proposals, budgets, workload projections and invoices, and collecting accounts receivable.
  • Manages a design team including training and development, estimating personnel needs, assigning work, meeting completion dates, and interpreting and ensuring consistent application of firm standards.
  • Review civil engineering plans and specifications, for a variety of different project types including master-planned communities, mixed-use development, commercial, residential, retail, etc.
  • Coordinate with other disciplines including architects, engineers, developers, contractors, and clients.
  • Accountable for the successful completion of engineering projects.
  • Assist in the preparation of engineering project proposals.
  • Budget monitoring and trend tracking.
  • Participate in Client/Contractor meetings and resolve technical project issues.
  • Ensure effective engineering and Client communications
  • Serve as Project Manager and/or Project Director on Land Development projects
  • Negotiate scope of work and professional service fees
  • Provide quality assurance and quality control oversight for Land Development
  • Responsible for client satisfaction
  • Support and encourage inner-office and inter-office collaboration for sales and work sharing consistent with a team approach
  • Represent the company in professional, civic, and political activities and organizations.
  • Business development duties will require developing relationships with current and prospective clients, soliciting project opportunities, day-to-day interaction with the Client’s designated project representative, and jurisdictional agency personnel.

Skills, Qualifications & Competencies:

  • P.E. license
  • A track record of establishing and maintaining client relationships in the greater Dallas area.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering.
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in site development market for a variety of project types in the greater Dallas area.
  • Working knowledge of applicable codes and standards.
  • Experience supervising other engineers, mentoring staff and allocating resources desired.
